Wonderful Signs

The Clemente connects and co-creates with contemporary artists, cultural workers, and small arts organizations by offering subsidized studios, exhibition, rehearsal, office, and venue spaces; and produces their programming in a spirit of responsiveness, heritage conversation, and provocative collaboration. Building off on a brand system developed by KUDOS in 2011, this project encapsulates its shortened namesake The Clemente in elegant brushed stainless steel letters. Sitting on the baseline of the scrollwork entryway, the opening signage is intended to work compatibly with the surrounding architectural elements. Accompanying the new signage are bright window graphics which play off the ribbon graphics seen in its logo. Playful while functional, they are fully light blocking for the black box studio within its walls.

KUDOS’s full signage proposal, currently undergoing the city approval process, delineates The Clemente as a modern cultural center in the Lower East Side while preserving its history as a former public school.
