“Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art” curated by Nozomi Naoi and Erin Schoneveld offered visitors a vibrant look at the evolution of Japanese graphic design, using posters as a lens to explore the country’s shifting cultural, political, and economic identity. Spanning from the early 20th century to today, the exhibition traced how posters responded to moments of war, industrial growth, and global influence, eventually becoming vehicles for social commentary.
Inspired directly by Nihon Buyö, a poster designed by Ikko Tanaka, and a feature of the curation, geometric shapes and vivid color fields create a visual rhythm throughout the space.
“In addition to becoming an iconic image that goes full circle to the arts of the Edo period, it serves as the creative DNA for the exhibition design of the Poster House show—replete with color, shape, and the spoils of Berman’s archive. ‘It felt like we were stepping inside of a poster,’ Schoneveld says. ‘It’s amazing.’”
An abstract hand-fan-inspired triptych at the entrance welcomed visitors, setting the stage for an immersive experience. Oversized typography (Nikkei Maru by Inari Type) is a tribute to Japanese immigration to America through typography, honoring the stories of Japanese immigrants and their descendants. The industrial lettering anchored the historical themes of modernization and globalization throughout the exhibit.
